With Leadership teams now having to depend on predominantly virtual meetings with employees for the foreseeable future, the importance of maximising one-to-one catch-up’s for all parties is worth putting extra thought into!
As Leader’s you should –
-Set expectations: what is each party expecting from the meeting?
-Have your employee set the agenda sometimes- mix it up to create interest & focus.
-Provide a structure & focus to the meeting.
-Listen intently to what is being said to you by the employee.
-Summarise at the conclusion to ensure both parties are aware of what has been discussed & agreed upon.
One-to-One Meetings are not just about solving problems, daily meet-ups can be used for this. Weekly / Monthly One-to-One’s should serve a different purpose – they are an opportunity for an employee to be heard & feel supported.
“The way you run a ‘One-to-One’ meeting with one direct report could be very different to how you run it with another direct report. So be flexible and don’t adopt a one-size-fits-all approach to such meetings”
